Project 365 Follow up
Posted two weeks, six days ago
20th January

Well it took quite a bit of work to get the site written and working, but Steve and I managed to launch www.p365.org on 2nd January. Granted we overshot by a day, but considering the amount of work involved in conceiving and creating it, and the timing of the thing - straight through the Christmas and New Year window - I don't think we did too badly. Steve has written all of the image uploading, resizing and image watermarking routines/APIs and I've written the webpages and created the graphics. Steve also found me some workarounds for misbehaving databases a few times.. without which I'd have been a tad screwed.

Since launch, we've continued working on the mechanics of the site and its member features, and it now sports image comments (though most members have opted to share comments solely between other project members) and a members' forum - hand-coded by yours truly, except for an openSource bbcode editor.

The site now has over 30 members who are contributing their images to the site on a daily basis and, by all accounts, thoroughly enjoying the experience. A year is a long time, and I'm sure by the end of it we'll all be a little frayed around the edges.

As for the project itself, I'm enjoying mine immensely. So far I haven't really pushed myself too hard photographically - it's only just over 2 weeks old, so far - and I'm sure that it won't be too long before I'm completely out of ideas for a photo, and pulling my hair out in frustration. It's at that point that I think my creativity will be properly tested and I will have to begin to venture outside the safe zone of my capabilities. I hope I don't crumble!

We are all project managers of our own Project365s and we all have our personal reasons for attempting the journey. My primary drive is to expand my understanding of what it is that gives an image value, and I am (as I suspect are most photographers) seeking the ultimate image to be proud of. I'm a long way off getting there but with a little bit of luck I'll know better where to look as the project moves along.

I really can not thank you and steve enough for making this idea a reality, it is working well and everyone is having fun. People on the site are contributing comments and inspiring other members in their style of photography, breeding new scope for their own avenue of progression.

Hope the new site works well for you and you have lots of fun. A picture a day is not achievable for me, so I am taking a pass.

@Warshu (comment #1): no need for thanks Matt! We're loving the project and we're loving working on the site. Developing code hand-in-hand with another developer can be fun, and Steve and I are having lots of fun testing ideas and tweaking the site. It's our idea of relaxing! :o)

@Ken (comment #2): a photo a day probably doesn't sound difficult to some, but it really is a challenge - we're only 21 days in to our projects (most started taking photos on Jan 1st) and already I've almost been caught out twice.. the 2nd time with literally seconds spare before the stroke of midnight! :o)
